Finding Great Deals On Parts For Trailers
Parts for trailers of all shapes and sizes can be easily found at the best prices if you know just where to look. Apart from all the obvious places such as industry publications you may want to try searching for them online. It’s always worth bearing in mind however that cheapest is not necessarily best when it comes to parts for trailers especially when you take the safety factor into consideration too. All mechanical and electrical components should come up to a certain quality standard and trailer parts are no exception. Some of the bigger units carry an enormous amount of weight over their axles and those brakes will be working real hard to pull them up when necessary so the parts have got to work spot on time after time. Even trailer lighting components need to be of the best quality if they are going to continue working in all weathers day in and day out for thousands upon thousands of road miles.
With any business there is always the pressure to reduce costs and overhead but fitting cheap trailer parts will never be a long term solution. Perhaps a short term cheap fix can sometimes be achieved but the long term cost to the business and in effect it’s customers could be devastating. Many of the modern trailers are fitted with some of the most sophisticated anti lock braking systems which are electronically controlled and these components need to keep working in the most arduous conditions. Road safety and vehicle operating regulations demand that all the components that go into a trailer perform at their utmost every single time over and over again. The bottom line is of course that the highways can be dangerous places and that’s when it may be too late to find out that those cheap trailer parts were not up to the job after all. So as the saying goes “it really is better to be safe than sorry” especially when hauling heavy loads on some of the countries busiest highways and byways.
Bearing all of the above in mind many people would be horrified to learn that some operators actually fit used or second hand trailer parts to some of their units. It is never a good idea to cut any corners in the area of maintenance or safety so this practice may appear a little baffling to say the least. Perhaps if a unit was stuck at the side of the road and a used part was all that was available to get it back to the depot there may be an argument for such practices. Needless to say however that no truck driver would feel entirely comfortable driving a unit that was relying on used or second hand trailer parts to stop it in a hurry. Ninety percent of the time a driver can get away with most things but there will always be occasions where traffic stops suddenly or there is a need for swift evasive action. These are the times when a few feet of braking distance or a slightly worn suspension component could in effect make the difference between life or death. Any large machine has the potential to be dangerous and trucks are especially lethal when they are involved in highway collisions involving any amount of speed.
Despite the strict controls on the manufacture of parts for trailers there is still little control over who fits them and where they are sourced from. There will even be times when a part may be modified to fit in the absence of the original and it’s widely acknowledged that some cheaper pattern parts have to be “made to fit” in many cases. The only way to be sure is by fitting the manufacturers original parts using a fully skilled operative to check the work. Just like the trucks themselves trailers should be subject to regular safety checks and recorded periodical maintainence schedules based on either working hours or milage covered. The problem with all moving parts is that they do sometimes have a tendency to work loose and this can even include (and often does) road wheels amongst other major components. At least if propriety parts for trailers are fitted buy skilled mechanics there is a lot less risk of anything going horribly wrong out there on the road.
